Notas: Introduction Anxiety is a health problem of increasing impact. It is currently leading to a significant impact on peoples’ living conditions and high comorbidity rates. Though still under investigation, Yoga therapy as an intervention to reduce anxiety levels has remarkably increased its popularity in recent years. Together with other empirically proven interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacological treatment to improve symptoms related to anxiety, yoga could be an alternative or complementary tool for effective coping. Hypothesis Yoga, considering factors such as years of practice, regularity, hours spent and the type of practice is beneficial for decreasing anxiety. Objective Determine the characteristics of the population, the main motivation for starting yoga practice and to what extent is beneficial to reduce the anxiety level taking into account factors such as type of yoga, time spent (years, hours), regularity, type and other sports. Method Cross-sectional study of 50 students who practice yoga in Sananda (Jaca) school. Anxiety levels were determined by the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and results were compared with the variables of interest. Finally a literature search was performed to compare with results of other similar studies. Results Yoga practice is beneficial if done for a prolonged period of time (> 1 year). Better results are also obtained when yoga is practiced with regularity or along with other sports or physical activities. For the latter two characteristics, however, the sample does not provide sufficient data to confirm the relationship of dependency. The most beneficial type of yoga is Hatha Yoga or Classic Yoga. Discussion and conclusions Many studies confirm that yoga is beneficial for mental health and more specifically for anxiety, plus the benefit is greater the closer the relationship between the individual and yoga. However other studies cast different conclusions, showing higher prevalence of anxiety in people who regularly practice yoga is observed.
